Roy Wegerle is a guy who I believe doesn’t get the props he deserves for his role in US Soccer history. Not, certainly by his peers, nor by his many fans from Luton and QPR and Coventry, but of segments of the general soccer going public that is developing in the United States. Because most US Soccer fans have become so since the advent of MLS, too many fans know only the older Roy Wegerle, at the end of his illustrious career following severe knee problems. The modern day “book” on Roy Wegerle from the average USA supporter would remember things like the Roy Lassiter trade in MLS, his substitute contributions at the 1998 World Cup, or his fringe involvement in the 1998 affair scandal that apparently led to John Harkes’ dismissal from the national team. For one of the genuine heroes of the 1994 World Cup for the USA, this is unfair.
